AMI Inclusive Climbing Workshop

Able2Adventure are working with the Association of Mountaineering Instructors to deliver training on increasing understanding and developing approaches to support climbing for disabled people.

This workshop will help instructors to leave with a toolbox of ideas as well as the confidence to work with disabled individuals and groups.

The training day will cover

Disability awareness and terminology

  • Types of disabilities
  • Gathering and sharing of information
  • Venue assessment (understanding your site as well as what the participant may want to know)
  • Choosing which routes to use and understanding why
  • Equipment (what is already available to you and how you can use it)
  • Simple hoist systems
  • Climbing movement techniques (common areas that people with both physical and learning impairments may need support with)
  • Assessing and adapting intuitively
  • Communication
  • Planning a progressive session or programme

This course is part theory and part practical. You will be given the opportunity to experience some of the different methods for supportive climbing.
